24 Preludes for Organ

This collection of preludes was composed between 2024 and 2025 for solo organ. What began as a modest compositional exercise—an exploration of how far a single musical idea could be developed—gradually revealed itself to be something worth expanding into a larger, more unified work. Following in the tradition of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Maverick set out to compose one prelude in each of the major and minor keys. The project took on new significance after he and his father restored a historic pipe organ together, after which he devoted himself fully to bringing the 24 Preludes to completion through intensive study and revision.

Rooted in the harmonic language and contrapuntal principles of the Baroque era, the preludes are nonetheless crafted with the modern listener in mind—accessible without sacrificing musical substance. While many function well as opening works for a program or recital, the collection as a whole is best experienced simply for what it is: music written for the genuine enjoyment of performer and audience alike.

On Difficulty

The 24 Preludes deliberately span the entire spectrum of technical and musical demands, from pieces an ambitious beginner can read on their first day to preludes that sit at (or just beyond) the edge of what the modern performer can be asked of.

  • Several preludes are intentionally approachable—written on two staves or with very modest pedaling, designed to sound impressive even in inexperienced hands. They are perfect for pianists learning the organ that want to feel comfortable while still beginning to implement the pedals.

  • The majority sit at what most would consider a very advanced level: dense textures, incredible stamina, and interpretive demands that require immense control of the instrument. Many professional organists will find them exhilaratingly difficult.

  • A select few push into territory most would consider borderline impossible in performance—written not to intimidate, but to explore the absolute limits of what an organist and instrument can achieve together. They are included as a dare and testament to the organ’s still unseen potential.

Whether you are taking your first steps or have spent a lifetime at the bench, there is something that will meet you exactly where you are.
